This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The Interest of America in Sea Power Present and Future Alfred Thayer Mahan Books

This is a simply stunning book that had enormous -– perhaps immeasurable -- influence on the thinking of Teddy Roosevelt. It was, in fact, TR’s constant reference to it when recounting his service as Undersecretary of the Navy that caused me to download it (for free -- Kindle could easily sell this book, but it is available at no cost, a really special treat). I was not prepared for this marvelous series of essays. They are truly magnificent.

The most startling aspect of this collection is just how unprepared the United States was for the globalization of the Pacific that took place after the creation of the Panama Canal. Writing two decades before that happened, Mahan argues forcefully that without a strong US Navy, the Panama Canal would be the worst possible thing that could happen to American influence in the world, and especially in the Pacific, because it would be controlled by the French (who soon gave up on the project).

This is a wonderfully well written book by a sea captain who had a gift for both strategic thinking and for expressing himself cogently, with verve and wit.

Mahan, perhaps more than any other late 19th century thinker, is responsible for the huge strengthening of the US Navy fleet under Roosevelt and later presidents, and the creation of the sea dominance that the US now enjoys more than a century later.

Highly recommended.

The Interest of America in Sea Power Present and Future Alfred Thayer Mahan Books Reviews

Realize that this is supposed to be a classic, but it was written over one hundred years ago. It is out-of-date and not a user-friendly read. I just gave up on it.
Bravo!
It was most interesting to read this military classic written more than 100 years ago. Mahan has been recognized worldwide at the time to emphise the importance of seapower to the strongest nations on earth, even to this day. The wording is a little old fashion an causes slower reading.

A remarkable insight into American strategic thinking in the late 19th century, and its influences through WW1, before the Panama Canal. His understanding of its potential influence are remarkable
